How Much to Spend on a Teacher Gift
$25 to $50 from one family, or a share of a class gift. In a November 2025 survey of 800 parents for K12, 72% planned to buy their child's teacher a holiday gift and expected to spend $50 on average in total. Check your district's rules first: in Massachusetts a public school teacher may not accept a gift worth $50 or more, though a class gift can total up to $150 over the school year.

Good to know
- Cookies, other homemade food and handmade gifts, or anything worth under $10, need no disclosure from a Massachusetts teacher.
- A teacher who accepts a class gift may not knowingly accept another gift from a parent who chipped in to it, so give one or the other.
- Other states and districts set their own limits; the school office can tell you yours.
